Sometimes when trying to update Group Policy on a user device I come across the following error which prevents group policy from updating.
If the error includes “the processing of Group Policy failed. Windows could not apply the registry-based policy settings for the Group Policy object LocalGPO. Group Policy settings will not be resolved until this event is resolved.”
Renaming the registry.pol file and rebooting usually resolved this issue.
Instructions
- Open File Explorer (Windows Key + E)
- Click on the View tab
- Tick Hidden Items
- Navigate to the following folder C:\Windows\System32\GroupPolicy\machine\
- Right click on Registry.pol and rename to Oldregistry.pol
- Restart the PC and try and run gpupdate / force again and Group Policy will now update successfully
